UGC Approved vs Entitled vs AICTE

✅ UGC Entitled
UGC Entitled (Online)

Universities on the UGC's "Entitled" list are permitted to run fully online degree programs via DEB. This is the only valid status for an online degree recognised at par with on-campus degrees in India.

🔵 UGC Approved (General)
UGC Approved (General)

A university can be "UGC Approved" but still NOT entitled to offer online degrees. Always look for DEB entitlement specifically before enrolling in an online program.

🟡 AICTE Approved
AICTE Approved

AICTE regulates technical education (engineering, management). AICTE approval is different from UGC-DEB entitlement. A program can have both, but online degree recognition comes from UGC-DEB.

Frequently Asked Questions

UGC Entitled (or UGC-DEB Entitled) means a university has received specific approval from the University Grants Commission's Distance Education Bureau to offer 100% online degree programs. Only entitled universities can award online degrees that are legally equivalent to on-campus degrees in India under the UGC (Promotion of ODL & Online Education) Regulations 2020.

Yes. Online degrees from UGC-DEB entitled universities are explicitly recognised for UPSC examinations, state PSC exams, and central/state government jobs under UGC (Promotion of ODL & Online Education) Regulations 2020.

UGC Entitled (DEB): The only status that permits fully online degree programs legally equivalent to campus degrees. UGC Approved (General): Recognises a university to award degrees but does NOT automatically allow online programs.
